One of the stories to come out of new releases heading straight to Video On-Demand (VOD) during the quarantine was the public squabble between Universal Pictures and AMC Theatres regarding the bypassing of theaters for Trolls World Tour. Traditionally, studios would release films in exclusively in theaters only, generally spending 90 days on the big screen before moving to VOD, DVD, or other means of distribution. Now, Universal and AMC have struck a reported multi-year deal that will reduce this time period to just three weeks before films will find their way onto VOD. This has the potential to shake-up the industry, with other studios likely going to look for similar agreements across the theater landscape.
